About Us

We are the Hoots Family - Jeff the Dad, Jennifer the Mom, Ryan the upcoming High Schooler, and Grace & Trevor, who are not far behind.

I, the dad, am to be blamed for this adventure - unusual, admittedly.  The common homeschool story is that the mom catches the vision, has to convince the dad, then is left with the unenviable task of winning the hearts of grandparents, neighbors, church members, and curious onlookers.  In our family, I persuaded my wife, and we committed to live this lifestyle together.

As we started our family, we once thought that we were doing our part by making sure we lived in a favorable school district.  In fact, we do - one of the top school districts in Indiana, if not the country.  Some think we are crazy for ignoring such a resource.  Maybe so, but we became aware of homeschooling through friends, reading, and observation, among other places.  Fortunately for us, the movement was coming more common.  Even though we weren't sure at first, my wife a little more than I, we both knew that we wanted more for our family than what the public schools would manage to provide.  Our memories of our school experiences are more negative than positive, and even though they aren't all bad, we knew we could do better.
High School independent study, I suppose.

So even before Ryan started Kindergarten, we made the commitment.  With the exception of Grace's partial year of 1st Grade in a public school (thought it would help, it didn't), we have been homeschooling continually and consistently.

Ryan became a high schooler in 2012.  We dealt with the temptation of plans B, C, D...Public School, online school, some type of hybrid, whatever.  We know that we can build off the success we've had, learn from our mistakes, and boldly go to and through adulthood together.  To say it another way, we choose to "do it ourselves" through high school, believing that this is the ultimate home improvement project.

There is much more to say.  This is a young blog, so more will be said as we go onward and upward!
